Barry Edwards:Cleveland entrepreneur since 1995
Graduating from Kent State University’s design school in 1989, Barry worked at a 7-person marketing communications agency for the next five years where he became Creative Director. Clients included Figgie International, Lubrizol, Steris Corporation and Sentinel Consumer Products. Barry left in 1995 to establish his own marketing communications company while also teaching digital art classes at Lakeland Community College. He continued to teach Photoshop to students of all ages until 2014. He consistently received excellent reviews from the students, fellow teachers and the department head.
Barry founded Edwards Communications with a focus on branding and marketing communications solutions. The company evolved greatly as technology changed the business landscape. Today, EC specializes in online lead generation, brand optimization and content development. Barry has won awards for exceptional graphic design, but today receives more praise for establishing successful lead generation systems for small businesses.
Barry started his Over 50 Starting Over blog a year ago. What started out as a blog aimed at exploring helpful small business marketing and personal tips to middle aged entrepreneurs is now in a second stage of evolution — the live format. Barry is melding his passion for teaching with his lead generation and branding experience and help people that are Over 50 Starting Over realize a truly passionate career.
Susan Licate brings a colorful marketing career spanning over two decades and the proven skills in strategic leadership, communications, fundraising and business administration needed to sustain and accelerate organizational growth. Her award-winning talents in marketing and media outreach along with extensive experience in the corporate and nonprofit worlds are supported by her education, holding an MBA and BA from Lake Erie College, mediation training through the Supreme Court of Ohio and strategic communications from Case Western Reserve’s Weatherhead School of Management. Her board governance experience includes 10 years of advising nonprofit boards and leading many committees. She presently serves on the Lakeland Community College Deans Faculty Advisory Committee. She is also an adjunct professor of business at Lakeland.
Susan has provided leadership and communications support for for-profit companies both large and small and guided nonprofit organizations and Boards with communications management, public relations, and crisis communications.
Susan’s work has been recognized and awarded for brand marketing and video campaigns; she was an Apex Award class winner in both 2016 and 2017 from the Lake Communicators.
Susan has decades of experience raising funds and managing events that purpose social service organizations, including the Epilepsy Association, Cleveland Free Medical Clinic and Lake County Council on Aging. Working at Lake Erie College, she contributed to many types of campaigns that helped bring in five- and six-figure donations.
She has provided marketing solutions for higher education institutions, professional service firms, healthcare systems and nonprofit organizations in Northeastern Ohio, and supported highly visible national events including the World Doctors Orchestra, the World Beer Festival, and Case Western Reserve University’s Visual Science Research Symposium. Susan managed the publicity for appearances on behalf of many colorful individuals, including Robert Ballard, founder of the Titanic shipwreck; football icon “Rudy” Ruettiger, the undersized Notre Dame player and inspiration for the movie “Rudy”; notorious CIA interrogator David Martine; and retired Green Beret special forces soldier and award-winning author S.B. Newman.
