Intro: Cleveland guys in Greece. September, 2006
My friend, Dan Drees and I (Barry Edwards) try to do as much traveling as we can. We’ve been to Spain, a few places in Mexico, places in the US and so on. But, September 11th, 2006 myself, Dan Drees and good pal JT Krohe went to Greece – Santorini, Mykonos and Athens, to be specific. Right upon arrival we met the two nicest girls (sisters) Anna and Barb. We had the most incredible vacation. I know that everyone will not make it to Greece in their lifetime, so I’m going to share what I can with you here.

I consider this the definitive photo of the trip. Its from our first day, we just met Barb and Anna, and we conquered Mt. Thera a couple hours later. The beginning of a fantastic 10-day adventure.
Our first adventure – the climbing of Mt. Thera. On the way up a stray dog befriended us. He became known as “Baxter”. He enjoyed the climb with us and departed happily afterward.

Our next adventure consisted of sailing to 3 locations: A volcanic island, the gorgeous small isle of Therasia and a last trip to swim in a bay that “contrains the fountain of youth”. What it actually contained was a lot of jellyfish! Several passengers got stung.
A very serene picture of Anna taken by Dan Drees
I love this picture that I accidentally took with the exposure set too high. It really captures the sun and color of Greece.
Dan spots the volcanic island.

Part 2: Volcanic Island Therasia and more
We land on the volcanic island. Its huge and we’re about to take a hike to the top. Barry Edwards stepping foot on the island.
Barry Edwards, Dan Drees and JT Krohe… a looooong way from Cleveland
Next stop -Therasia. Kind of like Gilligan’s Island with some shops on it – and the BEST gyros ever. I mean, EVER.
Dan waded out in the crystal clear water to take this picture. I was specifically saying at that moment, “This is the BEST! I will always remember this very moment for the rest of my life”.
JT Krohe beachside on the small village of Therasia, Greece. Orders some seafood.
Not so sure about that seafood!
Getting ready to roll out of Therasia
Leaving Therasia, we stopped to swim in the “Fountain of Youth” with some unwanted jellyfish. Nursing some wounds, we head back to Santorini.
This is a hotel built into the mountain. Wish we could’ve stopped and checked it out.
Back at our hotel in Santorini, JT catches up on some reading in the sun.
Part 3 : Santorini and Mykonos
Our adventurous day of climbing Thera and sailing to 3 destinations left the others tired for the evening. Not Dan and I.
We went downtown to check out the sites. Staying out a little too late and perhaps a little tired, Dand I argued our way back to the hotel.
Barry stops to pet a homeless dog that reminds him a bit of his own dog, Bowser. Not to worry – homeless dogs on Santorini lead the good life.
Dan Drees, Barry Edwards – Shopping in Santorini. This led to a fairly wild night out in Fira, Santorini
— CENSORED — PHOTO REMOVED VIA JT’s REQUEST. TOO BAD – WAS REALLY FUNNY. caption: JT was feeling generous with his rose that evening.

Our first day in Mykonos. As if our trip couldn’t get any better, we get a gorgeous room overlooking the Aegean Sea. Dan made sure I turned the label on the beer to face the camera.
JT Krohe pondering life’s intricacies.
Dan and I got scooters and explored the island and beaches while JT went snorkling.
The ending to a perfect day.
Eventually we all decided to go out to Paradise Beach for the day and evening. For JT, make that, “day, evening and next morning”.
Watching JT. He just made things very interesting.
JT pulls out his ultra-cool shades for the first time and demands that we call him, “Rick”. He insists that these shades make him 110% cooler. He proved us right.
“Rick” scopes the beachside techno bar. In particular the blonde in the middle. He predicts that he’ll be dancing with her within minutes.
This guy’s also getting the vibes from our blonde friend. In fact, he’s really feeling it.
Part 4 : “Rick’s” Coming out party at Paradise beach
Our day at Paradise beach turned into evening as JT put on his “Rick” sun glasses and staked his claim to the night.
Determined to dance with the young blonde in the beachside techno club, “Rick” makes his way onto the dance floor.
Paradise Beach will never be the same.

JT strikes again.
Dan Drees enjoying the local flavor of Paradise Beach in Mykonos. This photo just cracks me up every time I look at it.
After JT was done getting his groove on in the club, he made his way to the next beach side bar where he met three new friends from a nearby island.
“Rick” makes another appearance. He wasn’t seen again until morning.
The next day consisted of casual shopping and dining in several small Mykonos cities.
Barry Edwards enjoys the sunset at the Irish Pub next to the hotel room. Gazing out at the Aegean sea puts it all in perspective. Who’da thought there would be an Irish pub in Mykonos? Photo by JT
Our attempt at crashing a mountain side wedding in Mykonos didn’t pan out as planned, but we did have fun at the accompanying restaurant.
Our final evening in Mykonos. What a beautiful island. Next… on to Athens!

Part 5 : Athens and the parthenon
Dan and I agree that getting our picture taken in front of the Parthenon was like scratching one of the top three things you want to do in your life off your bucket list. As gorgeous as the islands are, Athens just can’t be missed. Our three days here provided our best photos of the vacation.
Barry Edwards, JT Krohe and Dan Drees in front of the Parthenon (part of the Acropolis).
The Acropolis is always under a state of re-construction and can be seen from nearly anywhere in Athens. And Athens is BIG, I tell you.
I think this is the Agora.. but I forget.
The Ampitheatre – part of the Acropolis.
Anna, Dan, JT and Barry at the top of the Acropolis
Barb and Anna looking beautiful with the very vast and congested Athens in the background. Athens sprawls out like that in all directions to the horizon.
JT Krohe took this picture of Barry Edwards taking a picture. The Acropolis always looming in the background.

Dan Drees pretending to touch the Parthenon. They are very vigilant about people not touching anything as the acids from our hands eventually take a toll on the ruins.

Part 6 : Last day in Athens. End of a perfect journey
Dan Drees, Anna, Barb, Barry Edwards and JT Krohe atop the Acropolis over looking Athens, Greece.
JT, Dan and Barry sit at one of their favorite restaurants. We came back for our last dinner here. It has an upper level outdoor dining area where we feasted like ancient Greeks with the Acropolis gorgeously lit up in the background.

Our last night in Athens, Greece consisted of several stops for appetizers (and Uzo) that culminated in an authentic Greek dinner and dancing.

I had to get a couple shots of the band’s singer in here. Absolutely gorgeous… and an incredible voice as well.
For the record, Barb took this picture.
Dan busts a move with the entertainers. After dinner, the audience is prompted to participate in the entertainment. And… unfortunately this is the end for our 2006 trip to Santorini, Myknos and Athens, Greece.
